“Creativity is part of the fabric of God’s image in us—shaping who we are and, through creative endeavors, restoring and realigning us to His image.”

Rick Sorenson is a creative with a holistic view of the arts, spanning visual art, music, drama, dance, and writing. He combines a biblical perspective with historical and aesthetic insights, encouraging readers to embrace the spiritual nature of creativity and overcome fears that hold them back from releasing their God-given gifts. Through his teaching and writing, Rick inspires others to create boldly and live with God-centered creativity.

Rick has always been creative and enjoys helping people discover their authentic creative self. Creativity drove Rick to learn drawing and painting, beginning in middle school and then in high school. He pursued art in college and then art school in Beverly, Massachusetts . Rick taught art to homeschool kids and in a private Christian school.

When he began teaching private classes to adults, he found the process often addresses hidden fears that had been suppressed since childhood. Rick has helped many adults let go of fears that were hindering their God-given creativity. Rick has taught graphic design classes to high school kids, as well as photography, relief printmaking, painting, drawing, clay, and 3-D work. He loves to teach, encouraging his students to pursue any art form that interests them. He teaches seminars in creativity, drawing, visual books with children, art’s spiritual nature, and setting up church art programs.

Rick has traveled to over 25 countries. During one of his travels, he visited a handmade paper factory in the country of Bhutan. It was a small building with dirt floors and little light. He met the factory owner and observed as the entire process was taking place right before his eyes. He was fascinated with each step and was impressed with the quality of the paper and their process; he immediately saw the value in it. Upon returning home, he founded an import company called Far East Art Imports. Rick traveled into Bhutan several times getting the business started, learning more about the product and clarifying business procedures. He became an international business man, importing handmade paper from Bhutan, selling to artists and art stores around the USA for 13 years. He introduced the Bhutanese papers to the US market and expanded the market for the Bhutanese Paper Factories. Rick is a member of the Southern Graphics Conference, and is still known as The Bhutan Paper Guy.

Rick's blog, The Creative Perspective, serves as the promised lagniappe—that unexpected extra gift—designed to help you uncover the innate creativity in each person and the way you bring it out of yourself to realize your ideas so that others will receive what you present as you intended. It is a deep dive into the mechanics of how we realize our ideas so that others receive them exactly as we intend. By exploring the delicate balance between Content and Expression, Rick guides you to look past the surface of a work to understand the true nature of aesthetics. Whether discussing the “weight” of a piece or the technical flow of a dancer, these articles provide the tools to recognize why certain works move us while others fall flat, moving beyond mere opinion into a clear understanding of artistic success.

As you engage with these posts — from identifying 'good' versus 'bad' works to exploring the foundational assumptions of art — challenge yourself to apply these insights to your own projects. The goal is to bridge the gap between your internal vision and the audience’s experience, ensuring your message is voiced clearly and integrated fully. By shifting your focus from the ego to the creative act itself—much like a singer losing themselves in a song—you can begin to let your passion flow in a way that truly resonates.

Many of us carry fears that have silenced our God-given gifts: the fear of failure, the fear of being misunderstood, the fear that what we carry is not worthy of being shared. Rick's writing gently but directly challenges those fears, encouraging readers to loosen their grip on self-consciousness and channel the creative energy God has entrusted to them. When a singer forgets herself and surrenders to the song, something transcendent happens—and the same is true when we surrender our creative gifts back to the One who gave them.

Read closely, think deeply, and apply what you find; in doing so, you will receive the benefit and thrill of living The Lanyap Life: a transformed understanding of creativity, identity, and the God who calls it out of you
